Happy February,
Did you know that our word of the month at Washington is

Mrs. Parker's 6th Grade L.a. Class Welcome Letter

caring? Our students and staff are looking for evidence of
students who demonstrate caring toward others. Caring
examples may include: inviting a student into a group, listening
while someone else is talking, reporting someone who is being
unkind, sharing things with students or showing concern for
another. Students who are caught having a caring attitude are
recognized on morning announcements each morning and
receive a special treat at lunchtime. Students who are caring
toward others throughout the month will be honored at the
Right Choices Assembly on Feb. 22.
Please discuss the word of the month with your child and help
them look for ways to show caring toward others.
Have a wonderful month.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Henderson
Schools will have new immunization requirements for the 2010-2011 school
year from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and Ohio Revised Code
(ORC) 3313.67 and 3313.671.
The changes in requirements are:
· The addition of a diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (Tdap) booster for

seventh-grade students;
· The addition of a second dose of varicella (chicken pox vaccine) starting
with enrollment for kindergarten for 2010; and
· The fourth dose of polio being administered on or after the fourth
birthday.
Parents of 6th grade students must have their children vaccinated with the Tdap
booster before starting in the 7th grade at the junior high. Please schedule an
appointment with your family doctor, the Miami County Health Department or
the Piqua Health Department Immunization Clinic, to have your child
vaccinated before the start of the 2010-2011 school year! You will need to
bring a copy of your child’s shot record to the clinics!!!
In addition, the following vaccines are also recommended for the 11 year old -
college age group by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):
• Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) - meningococcal disease is a serious
Gradebacterial illness that includes meningitis (the inflammation of the protective
layer surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and septicemia (blood poisoning).
• Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series The HPV vaccine is
also known as the “cervical cancer vaccine.” In January 2010, the
recommendations for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine have been modified
to include the availability of and recommendations for bivalent HPV vaccine,
and a permissive recommendation for administration of quadrivalent HPV
vaccine to males aged 9 through 18 years to reduce the likelihood of acquiring
genital warts. UPDATED Jan 2010

Formerly known as Odyssey of the Mind, Destination
ImagiNation is an international program which encourages
participants to work together to creatively problem-solve in
order to reach a solution to a specified open-ended challenge.
DI builds creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
in a manner that fosters teamwork and benefits all participants.
Each challenge encourages participants to use talents and
abilities, nurture research and inquiry skills, and improve
written and verbal communication as students are involved in
public speaking and performance.
Students of similar age participate on teams of up to 7
members. Over the 8-12 weeks of the program, they work
together to present their solution to challenges posed by the DI
organization. Students collaborate with a team manager who
facilitates their work, but has no influence over the choices
students make; the solution to both the main Team Challenge
and the Instant Challenge belong solely to the students
involved. The Instant Challenges require rapid-fire critical
thinking where teams problem-solve and present their solution
in a short improvisational performance. The main Team
Challenge is one in which students are engaged in solving
over a longer period of time and, therefore, includes more
required components. These Team Challenges are comprised
of two parts, a Central Challenge and 2 Side Trips. The
Central Challenge is academically based, involves research,
and focuses on Science, Literary/Fine Arts Elements, and
Mechanical and Structural Design. The Side Trips are based
on the theory of multiple intelligences and allow students
complete freedom in developing these elements as they
choose, allowing the group to use individual talents and
abilities to their greatest potential.
Teams compete on a local level, which could lead to
tournament on a national level, however, innovation, creativity,
enjoying the process, and teamwork are valued over any
points or awards that could be earned. Piqua City Schools
Mrs. Parkercurrently has 3 teams at the second-grade level, 4 teams at
the third-grade level, and 3 teams at the fourth-grade level.
Third and fourth grade teams will compete with area teams
while the second grade teams are at a learning level and will
not be compared with other teams. This year’s Tournament is
set for March 20, 2010 at Tecumseh High School.
We are all aware of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti last
month. The news reports and the pictures of the children left without
parents and homes have broken our hearts. Mrs. Deaton's fourth grade
reading class had been discussing advertising and persuasion at the same
time as the earthquake so the students wanted to connect what we were
doing in class to making a difference for Haiti. Students went class to
class discussing the devastation and the need to raise interest among the
Washington students. All money collected would be donated to the Miami
County Red Cross.
Fortunately for this student lead campaign, we were preparing for our
Washington Math Family Fun Night at the same time. The staff and
students were more than anxious to have the profits from the meal
donated to the Red Cross for Haiti. Also, the parents and students in
fourth grade organized a bake sale that was held during the Family Fun
Night. In addition, Parker's donated an awesome new skateboard to be
raffled off to a student. Between the dinner, bake sale, and raffle profits,Mrs. parker
the students raised almost $500 for the Red Cross for Haiti. Students
have learned that small efforts of caring can make a big difference.
