When you listen to a song, do you analyze each different part? Often times when I first hear a song I let the words wash right over me without thinking about them hardly at all. However, because of the uniqueness of the song The Cave, it had a much different affect. I was immediately fascinated with the philosophical and theological undertones that it produced. These undertones open up a wide range of interpretations. While some of us may interpret a song to mean one thing, someone else may interpret it to mean something completely different and this song is a perfect example. The running theme of the song appears to be about the conflicts that we have within ourselves, however, there is also an underlying message about seeing past this dark world and becoming happy.

I’ve had several thoughts about what the theme of this song represents but I believe I’ve figured it out. When the song references, “So come out of your cave walking on your hands and see the world hanging upside down”, this means the man who went into the cave was much different when he came out again; so much so that it was almost as if he were dead. This experience in the cave had such an impact on him that he looked at the world differently than any other men have and he felt that he had come out of the cave walking on his hands. Many believe that the cave is a spiritual reference. Coming out of the cave walking on your hands means that after our souls are awakening, we see the world much differently because we now know the truth about God. Our thoughts about our reality are changed drastically, represented in the line, “You can understand dependence when you know your makers land.”

A very prominent element to consider is two metaphors that run throughout the song. Mumford and Sons write, “So tie me to a post and block my ears” which is referencing Homer’s Greek epic, Odyssey. In his epic, there is a man named Odysseus who came upon a land of the Sirens along with his sailors. The Sirens were known as monsters who sang songs that were so enticing that they would lure the ship towards them until it would crash among the rocks. All of the men on the boat filled their ears with wax as they passed the islands, but instead, Odysseus ordered the others to tie him to the post because he wanted to hear the Sirens’ song. The second metaphor references Plato’s allegory in the lines, “So come out of your cave walking on your hands and see the world hanging upside down.” This line is explained in Plato’s idea to tie down children who were prisoners in a cave and force them to stare at a wall, unable to move. On the wall were shadows of objects and people who would come in and out of the cave. Plato suggests that if the prisoners were released after many years of staring at the shadows, they would not be able to understand the things they saw outside the cave. The shadows would remain more real to them. After understanding these metaphors, the meaning of the song became much clearer and I had an even greater appreciation for Mumford and Sons. In referencing Homer’s Greek epic and Plato in their song, I believe that made their ideas and messages come to life.

One of the greatest themes of the song is the repeated idea of holding on/not letting go. This is evident in the phrases such as “hold on hope” and “I’ll find strength.” These lines suggest that there is hardship in someone’s life but things will improve over time. This leads us to the opening lines of the song where it says, “It’s empty in the valley of your heart, the sun it rises slowly as you walk, away from all the fears and all the faults you’ve left behind.” Although it notes that the sun is rising slowly, the most important thing is that it is rising. This conveys that the sun is gradually beginning to shine on the “empty valley”, meaning the dark time that the person is going through will improve as time goes on.

This song, despite all of its possible interpretations and messages, has remained a rather popular song and is one of my favorites of Mumford and Sons. I believe the reason this song has become such a success is because of the inclusion of meaningful and interpretive lyrics that appeal to the listeners. Mumford and Sons use both the main and underlying messages of the song to spark the attention of those listening and opens their minds to their ideas. This song is about darkness, emotions, and getting through our hardships. One can see that this song has well organized themes throughout that convey a strong message to those that find themselves in a similar dark time of their lives. So, what will bring you out of the “cave”?

Suspecting the cave could have its own ecosystem, Nicolai hires a team of cave divers and climbers led by Jack (Cole Hauser) to investigate. The team discovers a link between parasites and a set of previous human explorers (introduced during an opening prologue, '30 years ago') in the cave. Soon, members of the team start to behave strangely.
